It's a Deadly World After All

There is something wrong here. I can feel it, he thought angrily to himself. But I can't figure out what.

Jose was frustrated. The early June sun beat down on the pavement relentlessly, baking the amusement park and its visitors in a sweltering steam bath.

He stood in front of the Country Bear Jamboree in Disney World's Magic Kingdom. He was vaguely aware that he looked like a sentry for Frontierland, with arms crossed over his muscular chest and feet planted apart. However, he didn't look like the typical visitor to the many Orlando, Florida theme parks, but Jose knew that was not the reason he was very much an object of attraction

What Secrets Those Eyes Conceal

The sky over Denali National Park was so clear this mid-March night that Mark felt he could see every planet in the solar system, every star in the Milky Way.  On such a moonless night, the landscape should be shrouded in darkness but it only enhanced the stars’ brilliance.  Though dimly lit, the surrounding landscape had a beautiful if not other-worldly look to it.  The mountains around him rose up like guardian angels, standing in silent vigil.

Mark lay on his back with hands clasped behind his head and gazed upward.  Large patches of snow still dotted the riverbed.  The cold kept most hikers far away this time of year.  Only muted sounds of insects gave any indication that other life besides him existed in this lonely spot.  Occasionally, the wind whispered through the brush around the area where he arrived to set up camp for the night.  Mark took off the wool cap he always wore when hiking during winter, in spite of the chill.  He chose to let the northern breeze rustle his short coal-black hair.

"Sup, bruh?" Tom said cheerfully as he vaulted into a chair in front of Detective Matthew White's desk. His short-cropped, fiery red hair seemed to glow in the fluorescent lighting of the dingy office. He draped thick muscular legs over the arms of the wooden chair.

The Cabin by the Lake

You can take the girl out of the city, but at your own risk……

Andrea climbed out of the vehicle, bracing herself against the cold and followed Tommy to the front door of the cabin. He unlocked the door and turned on the interior light. The cabin consisted of a large single room, with a kitchen to the right and a queen-size bed to the left. A small bureau with a mirror and portable TV on it sat next to the bed. Shelves with a few books and a floor lamp were near the bed on the same wall as the front door. A tiny bathroom could be seen through a doorway beyond the bed.

Ouija Bored

Four WDC writers try to cure writer's block with a Ouija board with unexpected results.

Inside a townhouse only a few miles south of the Pentagon, four writers sat in a dimly lit room among countless empty bottles of beer, rum, whiskey and gin and boxes of pizza strewn about. At this late hour of the night, no ideas for stories had been developed and the constructive suggestion to run naked up I-395 had been soundly defeated.
